one down, many more to go…

January 1, 2011

Yep, it’s one year since I decided to follow my calling.  One year ago I attended my first coaching class and have never looked back since…  OK, maybe once or twice.

The saying a “blessing in disguise” is so true.  About a year and half I was sidelined at my day job. Just when thought I was at the top of career, on my way to fame, appearing on TV, radio and in the newspapers and taking decisions that effected people of Dubai and its visitors.

Then, BAM, in a blink it was all gone. Luckily I called my friend Alistair Skllern to get a coach for myself. I blurted out to him, “I want to be a coach.”  Who would have guessed that in one year I would be an entrepreneur, have my own company and be on my way to becoming a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach.

During this one year I have met some amazing and inspiring individuals and I have become part of the great CTI community.  I have done things I was destined for and longed to do my entire life; even things I was scared of. I embraced a journey of self-discovery, swimming in the river of my life, discovering the soft and bright, the dark and stinky parts and places.

I have learnt and discovered:

  • What it means to be selfless
  • How much ego I’ve have
  • How much I love attention
  • That I’m a true leader
  • How judgmental I can be
  • How scared I am of being a loser
  • The fears that have controlled me all my life
  • The meaning of gratitude
  • That it’s OK to be doing nothing
  • How to be present in the moment
  • That I still have bricks walls to smash before I can fully uncover my authentic self
  • What a hypocrite I can be, pretending and faking my connections with people out of pride
  • How to accept and ask for acknowledgement

With all that self-discovery I should be exhausted!  But I’m not. I feel energized and invigorated.

The CTI model is not a divine or religious system, yet it captures so much of life’s beauty, authenticity and simplicity. Think of the model’s cornerstones, the contexts, principles and skills. I can write a book about each one of them.

Can you imagine a world where every single person is treated as naturally, creative, resourceful and whole?

Can you imagine a world where a speaker gets to speak and the listener holds the space for a safe and courageous conversation that helps the speaker unwrap their authentic self?

Can you imagine how beautiful a conversation would be when the listener is dancing in the moment, holding the agenda for the speaker?

Coaching is about conversations that address our whole lives. It doesn’t put any limits on what we as human beings can evolve into.

It sure has been a remarkable first year; more is to come. But whatever is left of my life will sure be worth living for. I choose to live an alive and fulfilled life NOW.
